Blogging Update and Ideas

If you’re still taking the time to check out my blog or are new here, thanks for stopping by. I know that content has been sparse since my move to Reno, Nevada — I’m still adjusting to life here and haven’t even fully set up my living space here. I’m attempting to create more long-form content and interesting reviews for this blog, but I’m also looking at transitioning my art and writing.

All said, it’s been more challenging to do this than anticipated. Perhaps that’s due in part to life here being substantially better than it was in Oakland, California.

But because I’ve caught a cold or something major (seems to happen every year around this time) from Stephanie — whom caught it from a two year old she babysits — I have more idle time at home than usual and will endeavor to use this to catch up on design, illustration and writing.

I’m also looking at migrating to Squarespace 7, since the UI is finally usable. SS6 was a mess; many will likely disagree with that assessment, but I couldn’t get anyone I know to switch to it.

Because Squarespace 6 was such an unintuitive design and Squarespace 5 support became, at best, an afterthought, I began looking at alternatives last year. I tried Silvrback (which looks great now, and the price is fantastic), Posthaven, Medium, Roon (recently acquired by Ghost) and Ghost(acquired Roon.io; Roon shutting down this month)… and a few others that aren’t really worth mentioning.

I’m adding a new post about Apple shortly. Additionally, I’ve been writing about Video Poker, and that entry should appear within the next few days. I’ll update the Instagram, Facebook and Twitter when it’s live.

Reno is fantastic!

Instagram @bradtastic

I'm absolutely loving it here. I just wish I had more time and energy each day because unpacking is time consuming. I suppose I have too much stuff... in addition to everything from my previous place, a bunch of furniture from the office came with.

Still sorting and organizing a month in, but even with the still packed boxes everywhere, it already feels like home. Many friends and acquaintances from the Bay Area were puzzled by my decision to move here — some called Reno boring — they really have no clue. Reno has just about everything I'd want in a city, and it's not that far from Lake Tahoe.

I just got my iPad replaced at the local Apple Store, and it's running great. It's encouraged me to work on iPad art again! And hopefully I can finish a few projects that have been held up due to my health issues. Perhaps it's too soon to get excited, but the atmosphere here is overall, more comfortable. I've only had one migraine thus far!

Also, I'm hoping that I can refocus on writing as well. Writing is a depreciating skill, and I'm somewhat out of practice. Although I've outlined many different ideas, I haven't been able to focus on publishing decent content. The environment and atmosphere in my new condo by the river should be much more conducive — all around, I feel better here, for whatever that's worth.

Hopefully things are good wherever you are, too... but if not, consider Nevada!

Now, if only we could do something about Harry Reid...

Bradtastic, now in Nevada!

Thanks, but no thanks, Bay Area!

I'm finally out of California, but I'm still working on getting settled. My new place is pretty nice, especially for the price! No more luxe high rise photos and fireworks shows, however.

But, I am right next to a nice looking river! It's peaceful here.

I will be writing again when my little office is setup. Right now there are still tons of boxes to unpack!

Hope all is well with everyone!

So now I'm dealing with BS!

So I haven't been able to do much of the writing that I've wanted to do (like stuff for this blog) because all of my time has been consumed by bullshit dealing with Park Bellevue Tower and its big fat asshole manager Mark Cherrington. He's an idiot, too, so it's not really that bad. But he's been on a power-trip as long as I've known him, and I'm tired of pretending that everything is okay.

But I thought I would share something very enlightening, an episode of Penn & Teller: Bullshit on recycling. It's amazing, the lies that we've been fed and never questioned. Like, get this: (at least in the US) buying and using paper isn't killing our forests — we have more trees in the US now versus 100 years ago. Using paper might kill a tree, but a new tree is planted in its place! And recycling paper creates a nasty byproduct of sludgy bleach. Also, we aren't running out of space for our trash. Check out the video!

Recycle your aluminum cans, though. And make sure you get paid for it!

Hope to get back to the fun tech stuff soon.

Orwellian America State of Decay

George Zimmerman verdict; society doesn't like it. They protest in Oakland, it's happening in my backyard and makes me think of a different time, place... George. These rallies take precedence in the media and by the public... what of new, horrible crimes? And child molesters? Many child molesters still on the loose, but the media focuses on Trayvon Martin and public enemy number one.

Some replies like this one from NBA legend Charles Barkley, unheard or ignored, will soon be lost and forgotten.

Dissent is dismissed; opinions against the mainstream — against the Party, against the President — are considered ignorant vitriolic slander, and are tossed like garbage after anger and hate is spewed at the originator.

Enraged and enflamed, mobs demand a street justice solution — the same kind of vigilantism they decry and claim ended Trayvon Martin and began this sad saga in America. New crimes, given token consideration, are quickly forgiven by the media and masses as if these events are expected, a logical consequence of perceived injustice. Excuses made for ridiculous, pathetic violence against bystanders by protestors. Juror threatened after speaking about the Zimmerman trial verdict.

This isn't science fiction. This isn't a new screenplay.

This is hate. This is ignorance. This is tragic.

This is America.

This is our future.

Sketching with Paper

Countertop Cityscape

Everyday objects can inspire. Bottles and objects on my bathroom countertop reminded me of downtown Oakland buildings, so I decided to combine the two.

I love skyscrapers and cityscapes; I like the architecture, the colors, lights and distant city sounds. I like the angles, contours, steel and glass. I also like abstract art — for me, it's emotion in tangible form. Combining these passions in Paper by FiftyThree on my iPad lead to this drawing.

Countertop Cityscape was a lot of fun to make. Keeping it messy let me focus on bold shapes, color and concept. For this kind of drawing, I think that the oStylus DOT is essential. I hope you like it!

I will continue posting shots as I continue experimenting with iPad art.

Fire alarm at 2am

So, in case you haven't seen my Bradtastic tumblr, here's a recap.

Around 2AM Saturday morning, the building's fire alarm was triggered. Slightly disoriented, I wondered if it was a drill; no, not at 2 in the morning... perhaps a false alarm? It keeps buzzing, at maybe 150db. I check my phone — no call from the building.

So I grab a few important items, grab scarves and a sweatshirt and head down the stairs. Floor after floor, I see no one else, until halfway down, one person joins us. At the bottom, exhausted, we meet up with a small, confused crowd; a moment later, we're out the door and into the rain.

A few dozen people are loosely gathered in front of the building, alarms blaring — making conversation difficult — not that anyone knew what was going on. No sign of a fire, however.

The Oakland Fire Department took over thirty minutes to arrive; by then, dozens more joined us in the cold, wind and rain. It takes another half-hour to determine the cause of the alarm — we were told that it came from the roof. More time passes, and the verdict is in.

It wasn't a false alarm... it was deliberate.

Some asshole pulled the alarm on floor 15 "as a joke," we were told. Firemen gave the all clear, and people started heading back up. I wasn't at all amused. Someone could have been hurt during the evac; while certainly preferable to an actual fire or emergency, the joke scared children and pets and wore me out. I'm still aching.

I hope the perpetrator/s get/s caught.
